PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore pitcher Christian Peters was selected to the West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team and he's one of five Pilots total to earn academic honors, the league announced on Wednesday. Joining Peters are honorable mention selections Cody Hawken, Ryan Hoogerwerf, Matt Kelly, and Cameron Richman.
Â
This is the first all-academic honor for Peters, a right-hander out of Centralia, Wash. A business major with a cumulative GPA of 3.78, Peters was solid out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2-0 record. He made 11 appearances and worked 19.2 innings, compiling 19 strikeouts.
Â
Hawken and Kelly both earned all-academic honorable mention last season, while this is the first league academic accolade for Hoogerwerf and Richman. Hawken, a junior outfielder from Vancouver who landed on the All-WCC First Team earlier this week, has a GPA of 3.25 and is majoring in environmental science. He led the team with 10 home runs and 36 RBI's, and he was second with a batting average of .316. Kelly, a junior infielder, finished the year with a .270 average, while hitting .314 during conference play. He's majoring in entrepreneurship & innovation management and has a GPA of 3.28.
Â
Hoogerwerf is an organizational communication major who originally hails from Allen, Texas. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.33, and he was third on the Pilots with a batting average of .296. He was even better against league opponents, hitting .339, and he was second on the team with six homers. Like Peters, Richman was a key reliever for the Pilots as he held opposing hitters to a .194 average. Originally from Walla Walla, Wash., the right-hander owns a GPA of 3.30, and he's majoring in marketing. Richman also posted one save this year, made 14 appearances and two starts, was part of two shutouts, and K'd 26 in 26.0 innings.
Â
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
