SEATTLE, Wash. – University of Portland video interns Ian Hannah ('18) and Cyrus Maunakea ('19) each won Northwest Emmy® Awards as announced by the
Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on June 9th at the 2018 Northwest Regional Emmy® Awards.
Hannah's video highlighting the best Portland sports moments of the 2016-17 season,
"University of Portland All Sports Highlights 2016-2017," won the "Sports" category in the 2018 College Award Nominations. Hannah had a separate nomination in the same category:
"University of Portland's Christie Hall Rallies Behind Tahirou Diabate," displaying the strong community support for the freshman men's basketball player from his dorm, Christie Hall.
Maunakea also had two nominations in the "News: General Assignment – Light" college category. His feature highlighting UP's outdoor recreation program,
"University of Portland Outdoor Pursuits Program," won the award among the four nominations. The story takes a deep dive into all the offerings the University of Portland Outdoor Pursuits Program, which provides the student body opportunities to explore the Pacific Northwest.
Maunakea's second nomination came with an in-depth feature on senior volleyball standout, Hannah Troutman,
"UP Volleyball Senior Hannah Troutman Career Retrospective." Troutman played a vital role in the rise of the Portland volleyball program after transferring in from Oregon State.
The four nominations in 2018 are the most in school history, while Portland, Pacific Lutheran and BYU-Idaho were the only private schools to earn nominations in the College Awards section this year. It marked the third straight year that a Portland intern won a Northwest Emmy award. Jenna Phillips ('17) won her category in 2017, while Riley Clark ('16) took home a win in 2016.
