Autumn Wedan here, I’m excited to be the girl to keep all the Pilot Volleyball fans up to date on everything with the team! First and foremost, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a freshman outside hitter from Klamath Falls, Oregon. My teammates would probably describe me as the craziest and weirdest girl they’ve ever met. I have a million nicknames, ranging from Otter to Harvey, but answer to just about anything as long as you say it loud enough for me to hear. And most importantly, I am extremely passionate about the game of volleyball.
The proposition to be the volleyball team’s blogger was presented to me by our amazing assistant coach, Sara Reilly, and I jumped at the opportunity. With my team/roommate Monica Jordan right by my side, throwing ideas my way that will make this blog the best it could be.
The team has been working overtime in the gym and in the weight room in preparation for the season. The days seemed to blur together between all of the double days, ice baths, meals, and naps. The entire team now knows the true meaning of the somewhat clichéd phrase “eat, sleep, volleyball.” But with the start of season in the very near future, the team is anxious to get onto the court at Oregon State and show them what we’ve been working overtime for.
Today was our last day of preseason practice, and it was a fun one. After weight training it was a race to the showers to make ourselves look the less haggard. Freshmen, of course, got last dibs on the showers, which was somewhat frustrating, but there is not a lot we could do or say about it. After all of the primping was over, we packed into a few cars and headed out to the yacht club. We were going to be taking a picture on a yacht for our team poster, and everyone was excited to see how big the boat would be. We made our way down the dock to find a tiny six person dingy waiting for us. At first I was thinking to myself, “well this just won’t do” until I looked out on the water to see the ACTUAL boat. It was gorgeous. We made our way in small groups out onto the yacht, and started talking about possible slogans.
Our actual photo shoot was fun, we took pictures in a few different places on the boat in our long sleeve uniforms, and the heat was unreal. Ariel Usher suggested we take a picture jumping into the water from the side of the boat for one last picture. We all climbed up on the railing and prepared to jump off, awkwardly trying to organize how we would jump without anyone getting injured. The photographer set up out on the dingy and we got into our best modified jumping positions. On the count of three we all leapt into the water screaming. As we surfaced, we were laughing and struggling to get to the boat as fast as possible. I swear I touched the bottom of the river, but everyone is convinced that it was too deep and I must have hit some sort of water creature. I don’t really need to know if it was a fish, I would rather just keep thinking it was the river bottom.
All in all the day was a success, and after the afternoon practice, we are ready to travel to Corvallis. I am anxious and excited to play, and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that it’s our time to show everyone what we’ve got.
Stay classy Pilot fans,
