PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland sophomore All-America Megan Rapinoe will miss the remainder of the 2006 college season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee. Rapinoe went down with the injury late in the first half of Portland’s 2-1 victory over Washington State at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex on Thursday. Doctors confirmed the ACL tear Monday afternoon and have scheduled Rapinoe for surgery on Wednesday. Typical recovery time for an injury of this sort is six to nine months.
Rapinoe, a unanimous All-America selection as a freshman on Portland’s 2005 national championship team, was one of the nation’s leading scorers in 2006. In just 11 matches, she had 10 goals and two assists for 22 total points. Her career totals of 25 goals and 15 assists puts her in elite company as she joins former Pilots Tiffeny Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan as the only players in school history to reach those marks as a sophomore.
Rapinoe was also making a push to be a regular on the United States Women’s National Team. She recorded her first two goals with the senior squad on Sunday, Oct. 1 in a 10-0 rout of Chinese Taipei. Rapinoe also appeared as a substitute in a 3-1 win over Mexico on Sept. 13 and was named to the 18-player roster for last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Iceland prior to getting injured.
The No. 4 ranked Pilots (11-2-1, 1-0 WCC) will look for their ninth consecutive win on Friday when they host the San Francisco Dons at 5 p.m.
