PORTLAND, Ore. --- Soccer America named Portland senior defender Michael Gavin to its weekly national team of the week. On Friday, Gavin buried the game-winner in the 110th minute as the Pilots defeated the San Diego Toreros 1-0 in San Diego. Gavin and the UP defense then blanked LMU 3-0 in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Gavin’s strike against the Toreros was his second of the season and came with just 53 seconds showing on the clock in the second overtime. On a free kick from 35 yards out, Gavin snuck a shot just inside the left post for his first game-winner of the season. Portland then stifled the LMU Lions on Sunday. The Portland defense has not allowed a goal during the last 405 minutes played.
Portland, which sits alone in second place in the West Coast Conference, has recorded four straight shutouts and is working on a seven-game unbeaten streak. Ranked 25th in the latest Soccer America poll, the Pilots will next look to improve their post-season standing when they travel to Cal Poly on Friday, Nov. 16, for a non-conference match. Portland caps the regular season at home against Santa Clara on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The Broncos wrapped up the conference title last weekend, earning the league’s automatic NCAA playoff berth.
