SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland junior Alex Elliott, sophomore Collen Warner and freshman Austin Guerrero landed on the All-West Coast Conference First Team as eight Pilots total received conference honors. UP and WCC champion Santa Clara each placed a league-high three players on the first team.
This is the third straight year receiving conference recognition for Elliott, a midfielder/forward who landed on the second team last year and was selected to the all-freshman team in 2005. Elliott ranks 13th in the country in assists per game (0.50 apg) and leads the Pilots and the WCC with 24 points, 10 assists and four game-winners. His seven goals are tied for second in the conference.
Warner, an attacking midfielder, has three goals with four assists. He earned conference honorable mention and landed on the all-freshman team last year.
Guerrero, in his first year as starting goalkeeper on The Bluff, leads the WCC with eight shutouts and 81 saves this season. He recently went through a stretch of 435 consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal and has a goals-against average of 0.98.
UP senior defender Michael Gavin, the 2005 WCC Freshman of the Year, earned second-team honors this fall. Senior defender Eric Fredback and junior forward Bryan Irwin were selected All-WCC honorable mention, while Guerrero and midfielders Frankie Lopez and Jarad vanSchaik landed on the all-freshman team.
Santa Clara swept the WCC yearly awards, capping a regular season that saw the Broncos win their second straight league title after posting an undefeated 10-0-2 mark in league play. Senior Peter Lowry was tabbed for WCC Player of the Year honors, while head coach Cameron Rast was named WCC Coach of the Year for the second straight season. SCU senior defender Jamil Roberts was named WCC Defensive Player of the Year and newcomer Jalil Anibaba received Freshman of the Year accolades.
Lowry is the fifth Bronco to be named WCC Player of the Year and the first since former teammate Mehdi Ballouchy took home the top honor in 2005. Rast moved into elite company with this season’s recognition, becoming just the third coach in conference history to earn WCC Coach of the Year accolades three times. Roberts led the stingiest defense in the conference en route to the top defensive honor, and Anibaba became the second straight SCU player to be named the league’s top newcomer, following teammate Stephen McCarthy, last season’s WCC Co-Freshman of the Year.
