PORTLAND, Ore. --- Freshman Danielle Foxhoven scored two goals and the No. 3 Portland Pilots extended their winning streak to 11 games with a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount in a West Coast Conference match before 3,115 fans at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex Friday night. Portland (12-1-0) improves to 2-0 in WCC games, while the Lions (6-5-3) drop to 1-1 in league action.
Foxhoven, who entered the week tied for eighth nationally in goals per game, was on the finishing end of two nice passes on Friday.
The first goal came in the 15th minute as sophomore Sophie Schmidt back-heeled a ball into space for sophomore Sara Jackman on the left side. Jackman serviced a perfect cross to an unmarked Foxhoven who elevated and placed her header into the upper right.
The Pilots benefited from a defensive miscue in the 42nd minute. Freshman midfielder Charney Burk made a blazing run from the right sideline all the way through the defense and into the left of the penalty box. After reaching the endline, she sent a short cross in front of the goal mouth. LMU defender Marissa Zamora attempted to clear the ball, but instead accidentally tapped it over the goal line for an own goal.
Senior All-American Megan Rapinoe set up Foxhoven’s second goal with a brilliant through ball into the left side of the penalty area. After taking one touch, Foxhoven finished inside the right post to cap the game’s scoring.
Portland outshot LMU by a 14-5 margin and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Pilot junior goalkeeper Kelsey Davis made four saves to record her 10th shutout of the season. Alyssa Clark stopped four shots in goal for the Lions.
Portland has now outscored opponents by a 43-3 margin on the season. Foxhoven’s two goals give her a WCC-leading 13 on the season.
The Pilots had numerous quality shots in the first half as Rapinoe put three of her five attempts on goal. Schmidt also put a good attempt just over the crossbar late in the first period.
Portland will return to the pitch for another doubleheader on Sunday. The women kickoff at noon against Pepperdine, followed by the UP men against Saint Mary’s at 2:30 p.m. Olympic Gold Medalist and Pilot alumnus Stephanie Cox (nee Lopez) will be at Merlo Field for the match and be honored at halftime of the women’s game. Cox will stick around to meet fans and sign autographs between the games and throughout the men’s game.
