MORAGA, Calif. --- Sophomore Sophie Schmidt scored 46 seconds into the match as the No. 3 ranked Portland Pilots defeated the Saint Mary's Gaels by a 3-0 margin in a West Coast Conference women's soccer match Sunday at Saint Mary's Stadium. Portland (15-1-0, 5-0-0 WCC) extends its winning streak to 14 matches with the victory, while Saint Mary's (8-7-2, 1-3-1) has now lost three straight.
Freshman Danielle Foxhoven added her WCC-leading 14th goal in the second half and sophomore Elli Reed capped the scoring in the 87th minute.
Schmidt notched her second game-winner and third goal of the weekend on Portland's fastest goal of the 2008 season. Freshman Charney Burk applied the pressure with a shot that was saved by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Tara Larson, but Schmidt knocked in the rebound for her eighth goal of the season. Schmidt, who recorded both goals in a 2-0 win on Friday at San Francisco, has now scored seven goals in the last seven matches for the Pilots.
Foxhoven doubled the lead in the 55th minute, knocking in a penalty kick after she was taken down from behind by a Gaels' defender in the box.
Reed put away the final goal off the post after a nice setup by senior All-American Megan Rapinoe. Junior Janelle Jacka was also credited with an assist on the play.
Portland applied lots of early pressure by putting five of its eight first half shot attempts on goal. The Pilots gained a 15-4 edge in shots for the match, with an efficient 11 shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Davis was forced to make just one save in recording her 12th shutout of the season.
Burk, who has primarily played this season as a wide midfielder, played a central midfield role for the Pilots today and Megan Rapinoe started on the right side of the midfield for Portland.
The Pilots welcomed back Under-20 National Team players Michelle Enyeart and Keelin Winters to the team after they trained for the last week with the U-20s. Neither Enyeart, Winters, or fellow U-20 teammate Elli Reed started for the Pilots.
Portland inched closer to claiming another WCC title with the victory. The Pilots are now tied atop the WCC standings with San Diego at 5-0-0 with two matches to play.
Portland will return home next weekend to host rival Santa Clara on Sunday. The match will be nationally televised live on ESPNU with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. Portland and San Diego will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. in San Diego.
