Scouting Santa Clara
The Broncos (4-11-3, 1-3-1 WCC) have had a rigorous schedule this season playing eight ranked opponents. The Broncos defeated No. 11 West Virginia but fell to No. 1 USC, No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 5 UNC, No. 6 Stanford, No. 20 USD and No. 22 California. Most recently, SCU traveled to the Los Angeles area to play LMU and Pepperdine, losing both matches with identical 2-1 scores. On Oct. 24 the Broncos couldn’t hold off the Lions despite outshooting them 21-11 and a 77th minute goal by sophomore Anessa Patton. On Oct. 26, the Broncos notched their lone goal on a penalty kick finished by junior Katherine Reynolds in the 48th minute. Reynolds leads the Bronco attack with three goals, four assists and 10 points, while freshman Jenny Laponte has four goals and eight points. Reynolds earned WCC Player of the Week honors earlier this season, after posting two goals and one assist in SCU’s win over USF on Oct. 19. Senior goalkeeper Meagan McCray has recorded 56 saves and counts two shutouts, good enough for a 1.54 goals-against-average. SCU has allowed 22 goals this season. Head coach Jerry Smith is in his 21st season leading the Broncos. Last fall SCU posted a 12-6-3, 4-3-0 WCC result, landing in the third spot in the conference. 12 letterwinners and six starters returned this fall. Santa Clara leads the all-time series against UP 14-11-2, but the Pilots own a 7-4-1 when playing at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore. In their last meeting in 2007, UP had the 2-0 edge in Portland.
Senior Day
Seniors Korie Nicholson and Megan and Rachael Rapinoe will be recognized prior to kickoff on Sunday as part of Senior Day.
It’s All Academic
Junior MF Michelle Enyeart and sophomore D Jessica Tsao have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 Team. Enyeart was a first team selection and becomes eligible for Academic All-America consideration. Tsao was a second team honoree. Enyeart posts a 3.39 grade-point average as a sociology major in addition to being a member of the USA Under-20 National Team. Tsao posts a perfect 4.0 grade-point average as a biology major and two-year starter.
U-20 Duty
Three Pilots were officially named to the USA Under-20 National Team roster that will participate in the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile this November-December. Michelle Enyeart and sophomores Keelin Winters and Elli Reed were the three Pilot representatives, the most of any school in the nation. Portland will finish the regular season with the three, but will not have their services throughout the playoffs.
Wholly Schmidt
Sophomore F Sophie Schmidt was a unanimous national team of the week honoree last week in addition to picking up the WCC Player of the Week Award. Schmidt tallied three goals in Portland’s two wins, including the game-winners against San Francisco and Saint Mary’s. A member of the Canadian National Team as a holding midfielder, Schmidt has taken a liking to her role as a striker with the Pilots. She has seven goals in the last seven games and is second on the team in scoring with 19 points (8g, 3a).
