LA FLORIDA, Chile --- University of Portland women’s soccer players Keelin Winters, Elli Reed and Michelle Enyeart helped the United States Under-20 National Team win the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over North Korea in Sunday’s final. Winters, the team captain, assisted on the USA’s first goal and played all 90 minutes alongside Reed. Enyeart came on as a second half substitute to help secure the victory.
The three representatives from Portland were the most of any program in the nation. All three played integral roles in leading the USA to the title. Winters started five of the six matches, including all three during the elimination stage. A native of Englewood, Colo., she scored one goal and recorded two assists while playing the entirety of all three knockout matches.
Reed, a Park City, Utah native, also played the full time in all three elimination games and started four of the team’s six matches as an outside back. She tallied one assist in the tournament while helping the USA allow a tournament-low three goals.
Enyeart, a native of Hemet, Calif., came on as a reserve forward in the final three matches and started two matches in group play.
All three players will return to the Pilots next season and are not expected to miss any time during the collegiate season due to national team commitments.
