BOZEMAN, Mont. --- The ninth-ranked Washington Huskies dealt the Portland Pilots a 3-0 loss Saturday morning at the Holiday Inn Classic at Shroyer Gym. Washington overcame a first set scare from the Pilots, but then went on to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-12 victory. Portland will conclude the tournament this evening against the host Montana State Bobcats, MSU knocked off the Pilots 3-1 on Friday.
Saturday’s morning match began with a back-and-forth affair in the first set as senior Ashley Grayson’s kill made the score 13-13. Shelley Sievers kill brought the Pilots (0-2) to within 18-17, but the Huskies (2-0) closed the set with a 5-1 run.
The Huskies mounted a 5-0 run early in the second set to gain a 15-7 margin. Portland clawed back to a 20-16 deficit on three straight kills by senior K.C. Fox, but Washington closed the set shortly thereafter.
The third set was more of the same as Portland hung around and trailed 12-11, but Airial Salvo rattled off 11 consecutive service points to settle the outcome.
Fox led the Pilots with 10 kills, but the team struggled against the Huskies frontline. After hitting .167 in the first set, the Pilots finished the match with 27 kills and 27 attack errors. Washington hit .209 for the match and racked up 11.5 team blocks.
Junior Maria Clemens had 11 assists, four kills and seven digs in her split duties as setter and outside hitter. Junior Kaylyn Jones added 10 assists for the Pilots.
Sophomore libero Danielle Dupar collected a match-high nine digs, as the Pilots gained a 41-35 edge over Washington in total digs.
Jill Collymore had a match-high 12 kills, while Jenna Hagglund racked up 27 assists for the Huskies.
