PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 6 Portland Pilots held the visiting San Diego State Aztecs to just two shot attempts in a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. With the victory, Portland claimed the team title of the Nike Invitational. Pilot defender Korie Nicholson was voted the Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the tournament, while sophomore Elli Reed earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player honors.
Washington defeated Northern Arizona by a 3-1 margin in the day’s early game. The Huskies joined the Pilots with two victories, but Portland earned the team title via a tiebreaker with its 10-0 scoring margin.
Reed tallied a hat trick in Portland’s 6-0 win over Northern Arizona on Friday and notched the game-winner Sunday in the 34th minute on a give-and-go with freshman forward Danielle Foxhoven.
Foxhoven netted the final two Pilot goals, tapping in a pair of sitters following nice set-ups by teammates in the 55th and 62nd minutes.
The first goal came when junior Michelle Enyeart took a ball deep in the Pilots’ territory and made a blazing run down the left sideline. After running past and around four defenders, some 70 yards later Enyeart entered the penalty box and drew SDSU goalie Aubree Southwick off her line. She crossed the ball to an opportunistic Foxhoven who punched it in to the open net.
Seven minutes later it was defender Megan Sweeney who dispossessed an Aztec in the penalty box and toe-poked a perfect pass to an unmarked Foxhoven. The strike was her team-leading eighth of the season and seventh in the last four games.
The Aztecs (2-4-1) were held without a shot in the match until the 76th minute, often keeping many numbers in the defensive third to stall Portland’s scoring attack.
The Pilots (6-1) have now recorded five straight shutouts and are outscoring opponents 25-0 during that span.
Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Davis did not have to make a save in recording her fifth shutout of the season and lowering her goals-against average to 0.28.
The Pilots will return to the pitch on Friday to host the Florida Gators at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
