PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore guard Jared Stohl drilled nine three-pointers and finished with a career-high 33 points off the bench to lead the Portland Pilots to a 78-60 victory over the San Francisco Dons Thursday night before 1,980 at the Chiles Center.
Stohl broke the previous school record of eight three-pointers, accomplished twice by Peter McKelvey during the 1991-92 season. He finished 9-of-13 from beyond the arc and made all six of his free throws. His previous career-high of 21 points was set earlier this season at Oregon.
“I’m not surprised,” Portland head coach Eric Reveno said of Stohl’s performance. “I’m actually more surprised when he misses shots. I see him make those all the time in practice and I thought the team did a good job of finding him tonight.”
As a team the Pilots (10-7, 1-1 West Coast Conference) tied a school record with 14 three-pointers made. Portland led by as much as 24 points midway through the second period after jumping out to a 45-26 halftime lead.
Junior guard Nik Raivio added 17 points and seven rebounds, while junior point guard T.J. Campbell finished with 13 points and six assists.
Junior forward Dior Lowhorn paced the Dons (8-10, 0-3) with 22 points and became the fastest player in USF history to score 1,000 points. He entered the game averaging 20.3 points and needed 19 to join the club. Lowhorn passed Bill Russell as the fastest Don to achieve the mark by doing so in 49 games.
Portland abused San Francisco’s zone defense in the first half with the three-point shot, drilling 9-of-16 in the period. The Pilots gained a 10-point lead at 23-13 with 8:07 left in the first period and would hold onto a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game.
The Pilots shot 48 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line. USF finished at 45 percent from the floor, but made just 6-of-21 three-pointers after entering the game as the WCC’s best three-point shooting team.
Portland outrebounded its eighth straight opponent, gaining a 32-28 margin on the glass. The Pilots did suffer an injury blow as junior forward Ethan Niedermeyer did not play in the second half after hurting his ankle.
The Pilots will return to the Chiles Center on Saturday to host the Santa Clara Broncos at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest and CSN California.
