LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Portland led early in the second half but a decisive 26-5 run spurred the San Francisco Dons to an 82-65 victory Saturday in the third round of the Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Basketball Championship at Orleans Arena. The Pilots finish the season 15-19 overall, while the Dons advance to face Oregon State in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Freshman point guard Joel Foxwell led the Pilots with 16 points and six assists, while senior center Jermaine Ballisager Webb added 11 points.
David Fuchs paced the Dons (17-15) with 23 points and 16 rebounds.
Portland shot 45.8 percent from the field and held the Dons to 42.9 percent, but USF collected 17 offensive rebounds and forced 16 Pilot turnovers. The Dons also went 19-for-28 at the free throw line compared to just 7-of-10 for Portland.
How it Happened
Portland led a majority of the first period and went ahead by six at 25-19 but Ryan Beasley made back-to-back threes. The Pilots were called for an away from the ball foul on the second triple, which led to a five-point possession to tie the game. It went to the break tied at 29-29. The Dons benefitted from a 17-3 advantage in first half free throw attempts and Fuchs had 15 points and eight rebounds by intermission.
The teams were tied four times and exchanged four lead changes early in the second half before the Dons caught fire and Portland stumbled. Four different USF players drilled three-pointers during a 26-5 run to make it 70-49 with 5:59 left. Portland still had some fight and went on an 8-0 run to pull within 13 points, but that would be as close as it would get down the stretch.
