PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore striker Danielle Foxhoven continued her torrid scoring streak with four goals in Portland’s 7-0 shutout of Gonzaga before 3,678 fans at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Foxhoven became the 13th player in school history with a four-goal game and only the sixth player in program history with multiple hat tricks in the same season.
After earning West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors with a hat trick against Montana and both goals in a 2-1 win over Washington State last weekend, Foxhoven made it nine goals in three games with the onslaught against Gonzaga. She now has 15 goals on the season, one shy of her team-high 16 goals as a freshman last year.
She joins teammate Kendra Chandhoke as one of 13 players to score four or more goals in a game in UP history. Chandhoke did it at San Francisco during the 2007 season. Foxhoven also joins former star Christine Sinclair as the only player with two hat tricks in the same season during the 2000’s.
Portland outshot Gonzaga 24-2 and had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks for the match.
Foxhoven scored first in the 23rd minute on an assist from Michelle Enyeart. She added a penalty kick goal in the 27th minute and then assisted on Enyeart’s goal in the 36th minute. She notched her hat trick just before halftime, again on an Enyeart assist.
Leading 4-0 at the half, Foxhoven wasted little time in recording her final goal. She finished a cross from Jessica Tsao in the 59th minute before being subbed out with 19 minutes remaining in regulation.
Sophomore Halley Kreminski recorded Portland’s final two goals, both coming in the final 15 minutes of action.
Kristen Kelly and Janelle Jacka each earned their first assists of the season, while Tsao had two assists in the game. Sophomore defender Kassie McCluskie also made her first appearance of the season off the bench, playing the final 15 minutes at center back. McCluskie returns from offseason back surgery after starting 19 games as a true freshman in 2008.
Gonzaga starting goalkeeper Amy Danielson was given a red card in the 34th minute after a hard tackle outside the penalty box on Foxhoven. The Bulldogs played the final 57 minutes with 10 players as Portland created multiple scoring chances throughout the run of play.
Portland senior goalkeeper Kelsey Davis made two pedestrian saves on shots from distance in the final two minutes and recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
Portland will continue WCC play on the road next weekend in Southern California. The Pilots play Pepperdine on Friday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. and LMU on Sunday, Oct. 18 at noon.
