PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore Danielle Foxhoven netted her second hat trick of the season as No. 3 Portland ran away with a 7-0 shutout of Montana Friday night at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. An announced crowd of 2,527 was on hand for the event, which was part of LIVESTRONG Day. The Pilots recognized 12 cancer survivors during introductions and gave away 1,000 LIVESTRONG wristbands to attendees in the effort to promote cancer awareness.
On the pitch it was all Pilots, even though many key players were given the day off for rest. After a sluggish start, Portland (10-1-0) bombarded the visiting Grizzlies with four goals over a 13 minute span late in the first half to put the game out of reach.
Foxhoven started the scoring in the 29th minute with a shot to the upper left on a cross by Keelin Winters. Kendra Chandhoke doubled the margin after making one touch and blasting a 20-yard effort to the lower right, surprising Montana goalkeeper Grace Harris. Halley Kreminski headed in her first goal of the season in the 41st minute with freshman Taylor Brooke earning the assist with a nice cross. Foxhoven scored the last goal of the half in the 42nd minute with sophomore Emma Nelson recording her first career assist.
Foxhoven capped her day in the 51st minute after Elli Reed darted through the Montana defense and sent a short cross to an unmarked Foxhoven. Her tap-in was her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Reed then benefitted from Sara Jackman’s cross in the 84th minute, depositing her third goal of the year. Jackman capped the scoring in the 85th as Charney Burk’s corner was flicked on by Elinor Priest to Jackman at the far post. She headed in the goal for a 7-0 victory.
Portland outshot Montana (2-8-0) by a 21-3 margin and built an 8-0 edge in corner kicks for the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung was not forced to make a save in recording her third shutout of the season.
Head coach Garrett Smith rested regular starters Michelle Enyeart, Sophie Schmidt, Michelle Olivier, Kendall Johnson and Jessica Tsao. Tsao came off the bench when Brooke was forced off the field with a cramp late in regulation, but the others did not play.
Portland will host Washington State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The Cougars are 7-2-0 and ranked No. 25 in this week’s Soccer Times national poll.
