PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore Danielle Foxhoven scored both goals and the No. 3 Portland Pilots held off a late rally by the Washington State Cougars for a 2-1 victory before 3,698 fans at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex on Sunday. Portland concludes its non-conference season with an 11-1-0 record, while the Cougars fall to 7-3-0 on the year.
Foxhoven, who recorded her second hat trick of the season on Friday against Montana, continued her torrid scoring streak on Sunday. Her goal in the 29th minute gave Portland the 1-0 lead. The play started when junior Kendra Chandhoke made a good run to the right endline. Chandhoke’s cross was gathered by Michelle Enyeart who tapped it to Foxhoven. After a quick touch, she placed a shot from 15 yards toward the right post. It ricocheted off the post all the way across to the left post before settling into the side netting for a 1-0 lead.
Portland doubled the lead when Enyeart was taken down in the right side of the penalty area in the 57th minute. Foxhoven stepped up and drilled the PK for her team-leading 11th goal of the season. It proved to be the game-winner as Washington State mounted a late rally.
The Cougars cut the deficit in half on a brilliant individual effort by Kiersten Dallstream in the 73rd minute. With her back to the goal 35 yards out, she beat one Pilot defender and dribbled towards the box before cracking a 24-yard shot into the upper left. It was Dallstream’s team-leading 11th goal on the year.
WSU had two more good opportunities to equalize in the closing minutes. In the 86th, the Cougars sent a corner kick in that Ali Fenter sent towards the right post. UP defender Elli Reed cleared it off the line, but right to Carly Dobratz, whose header sailed just over the cross bar. In the 89th minute, Brandi Vega was sprung into a 1-v-1 with Pilot goalkeeper Kelsey Davis. Vega’s 20-yard attempt was heading for the upper left, but Davis lunged and made a game-saving stop to seal the victory.
With the late flurry, the Cougars outshot the Pilots 12-10, while Portland had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Portland will host Northwest rival Gonzaga to open West Coast Conference play next weekend. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
