SEATTLE, Wash. – Portland Pilots men’s tennis double team of Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining won the inaugural PNW Intercollegiates Sunday at the Nordstrom Tennis Centre defeating Washington’s Brad Bator and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan 8-5 in the final.
The Pilots wrapped up their fall season going 4-1 in doubles and 5-11 in singles at the tournament featuring players from UW, Oregon, Boise State, Portland, Portland State, Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Gonzaga.
The Zivkovic/ Schleining doubles win ruined a Huskies sweep as the UW team won both Flight A and B singles titles. The semifinal win against UW’s Alex Rosinski and Tobi Obenaus came two weeks after a quarterfinal loss to them at the ITA Regional Championships two weeks ago in Berkeley, Calif.
"Filip and Evan played outstanding this weekend,” said UP head coach Aaron Gross. “To beat the same UW team in the semifinals 8-3 that beat them just two weeks ago says a lot for our guy’s belief in themselves and their ability to make some adjustments. They played really sharp all weekend. I think that when they play their best tennis at this point that they can play with any team in the country.”
The Pilots are back in action in 2010 with a dual match against University of Washington on Jan. 21 in Seattle, Wash. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m.
