PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland improved to 2-0 against West Coast Conference competition and won its sixth straight match with a 7-0 men’s tennis victory over Gonzaga on Friday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
The Pilots (6-1, 2-0) earned the sweep of the doubles point with scores of 8-1, 8-1 and 8-3. Five of the six singles matches were won in straight sets by the home team, while sophomore Bryan Thorp pulled off an impressive comeback victory at No. 2 singles.
“We played really well today,” Portland coach Aaron Gross said. “We set the tone in doubles by playing aggressively and winning decisively. Gonzaga's top three singles guys are tough and battled, but we were able to get the upper hand. Bryan Thorp came back from a huge hole, down 7-6, 5-0 and managed to grit out a victory. We seem to be continually improving and are really looking forward to a very challenging part of our schedule coming up starting later in the month."
