SEATTLE, Wash. --- The third-ranked Portland Pilots picked up their third straight shutout against a Pac-10 team with a 2-0 win over the No. 24 Washington Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Field. Sophomore Danielle Foxhoven continued her offensive onslaught with both of Portland’s goals. Foxhoven has netted four goals during the past two games.
The Pilots (3-0) have outscored their opponents 9-0 this season, with all three wins coming against teams from the Pac-10 conference. The Huskies drop to 1-1 on the year.
“It was not one of our better performances of the year, but we got a good result,” said head coach Garrett Smith. “That was some world class finishing by Danielle Foxhoven. It was good to get her some rest on Friday night because she was fresh and basically won us the game today.”
Foxhoven, Portland’s leading scorer last season, picked up where she left off on Friday night when she scored UP’s first two goals during the 4-0 drubbing of No. 16 California at Merlo Field. Her first strike against the Huskies came in the 22nd minute on a feed from junior Jessica Tsao. From about 20 yards out, Foxhoven cracked a curling shot with a half-volley that found the back of the net just inside the right post to give UP the early 1-nil advantage.
About 17 minutes later, the native of Littleton, Colo., gave Portland a two-goal cushion with her fourth goal of the season. This time she found the top left corner of the net from 18 yards out. The goal went unassisted.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half. Washington outshot the Pilots 17-11 with a majority of the UW shots coming in the second stanza. Portland held the advantage in corner kicks with a 6-2 edge.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung went the distance between the pipes to pick up her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career. She made six saves on the day.
UW keeper Kari Davidson finished with two saves.
The Pilots next return to Seattle for the Husky Invitational next weekend. Portland is set to play Colorado College on Friday and Columbia on Sunday.
