PORTLAND, Ore. --- Michelle Enyeart and Danielle Foxhoven tallied goals as the No. 2 Portland Pilots defeated the Miami Hurricanes 2-0 Sunday afternoon before 3,038 fans in the final game of the Nike Invitational at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Portland (7-0) claimed the tournament title after also defeating Illinois by a 4-1 margin on Friday. In Sunday’s early game, Washington knocked off the Fighting Illini, 1-0.
Enyeart, who recorded her first career hat trick on Friday, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Brittney Macdonald of Miami (4-3) was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the invitational.
The Pilots had numerous scoring chances and near misses throughout Sunday’s contest as the team racked up 26 shots and 12 corner kicks. Miami goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo made 11 saves in the contest and the Hurricanes also had a team save when a defender cleared a Pilot shot off the goal line.
Enyeart tallied the first score in the 11th minute after running onto a perfect slot pass into the left side of the penalty box from junior forward Sophie Schmidt. Enyeart took one touch and sent a low shot between the legs of a charging Alonzo for a 1-0 lead.
After multiple near misses and clutch saves by Alonzo over the course of the next 75 minutes, Portland finally scored an insurance goal on a set piece in the 86th minute. Foxhoven took the free kick from about 25 yards out and straight on frame. Her attempt glanced off the top of a Miami defender and found the upper right of the goal.
Miami had five shot attempts for the game and three corner kicks.
Portland senior goalkeeper Kelsey Davis made one save in recording her third shutout of the season.
The Pilots will next hit the road for two games in the Lone Star state. Portland will face perennial soccer powerhouse Texas A&M on Friday at 5 p.m. (Pacific) and then take on Southern Methodist Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Both games will have a free live audio broadcast through portlandpilots.com.
