DALLAS, Texas --- The No. 2 Portland Pilots returned to their winning ways with a 6-0 shutout of Southern Methodist Sunday afternoon at Westcott Field. Michelle Enyeart and Kendra Chandhoke scored two goals apiece, while Kendall Johnson and Sophie Schmidt added a goal and an assist each.
Portland (8-1) dropped its first match of the season on Friday at Texas A&M, but looked strong again on Sunday as the offense came from multiple sources.
“It was a great day to get everyone involved and spread the goals around,” Portland head coach Garrett Smith said. “It was nice to bounce back after a tough loss and play the way we did today. Overall, it was a good team performance.”
Johnson, a freshman from Lincoln High School in Portland, tallied the first goal in the 22nd minute on an assist from Enyeart. The duo doubled the score five minutes later as Johnson found Enyeart for the finish and a 2-0 lead going into the half.
The Pilots opened the flood gates early in the second period with four goals in the first 18 minutes after intermission. Schmidt scored first with a penalty kick goal in the 49th minute after Enyeart created the opportunity by being fouled in the penalty box. Schmidt then returned the favor by setting up Enyeart’s second goal of the day in the 52nd minute.
Junior Kendra Chandhoke capped the scoring with a pair of goals 27 seconds apart in the 63rd minute. The first came on an assist from Elli Reed, while Halley Kreminski was credited with the assist on the last goal.
The Mustangs (2-5) did their part to test the Pilot defense by putting eight of their 14 total shots on goal. UP sophomore goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung was up to the task and made eight saves in recording her second shutout of the season and Portland’s sixth as a team. SMU goalkeeper Courtney Webb made two saves for the match.
Freshman Taylor Brooke, sophomore Charney Burk and junior Kristen Kelly earned their first starts of the season for the Pilots on Sunday. Burk led the team with six shot attempts in the contest.
Portland will now return for a four-game homestand beginning on Friday, Sept. 25 against Oregon State. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. It is the only game of the week for the Pilots.
