SEATTLE, Wash. --- Junior Elli Reed provided both goals as Portland continued its shutout streak with a 2-0 win over Colorado College in the opening game of the Husky/Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Tigers entered the contest with a 2-0 record and ranked No. 23 nationally by Soccer America, but they became the fourth straight shutout victim of the No. 3 Pilots (4-0) to open the 2009 season.
Reed recorded her first two goals of the season in the first half, continuing her dominance of the Husky/Nike Invitational. She was named the 2008 Defensive MVP of the tournament after recording four assists last year in Seattle.
The first goal came in the 21st minute as junior defender Jessica Tsao made a nice run down the right side. Tsao found sophomore Danielle Foxhoven across the penalty area and Foxhoven then laid off a nice pass to Reed who blasted her attempt into the upper left of the goal mouth.
Reed added a second goal in the 44th minute. Junior Kendra Chandhoke forced Tigers’ goalkeeper Caitlin Hulyo to make a diving save with a rocket from the top of the box. Hulyo was up to the task on the initial attempt, but Reed opportunistically tapped in the rebound from close range.
Portland head coach Garrett Smith was pleased with his team’s overall performance.
“We played a lot better today,” Smith noted. “The game was played at our pace and we were much improved with ball control and possession. Limiting a quality side like Colorado College to three shots, all in the second half, showed quality defending. Unfortunately, we didn’t convert offensively as much as we would have liked.”
Senior goalkeeper Kelsey Davis played all 90 minutes and made two saves to log her second shutout of the season and the 25th of her three-year Portland career. Hulyo stopped five shots for the Tigers.
Portland held an 18-3 edge in total shots and 8-1 margin in corner kicks.
The Pilots will conclude the Husky/Nike Invitational on Sunday with an 11 a.m. kickoff against Columbia. The Lions open their regular season tonight against host Washington.
