PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior forward Luke Sikma came off the bench for Portland with 12 points and a career-high 19 rebounds as the Pilots defeated the Army Black Knights 67-57 Saturday afternoon before 1,681 at the Chiles Center. Sikma was one of four Pilots in double figures as Portland improves to 6-1 at home this season.
Senior forward Ethan Niedermeyer scored a team-high 14 points, including 4-for-7 from three-point range, while seniors Nik Raivio and T.J. Campbell added 11 each for the Pilots (9-5).
Army (9-4) was led by Julian Simmons with 17 points. Josh Miller and Cleveland Richard added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
After trailing 6-2 early in the contest, Portland went on an 18-0 run which included four consecutive three-pointers and then took their largest lead of the game at 22-7 on a layup by Robin Smeulders.
The Pilots had a comfortable 39-26 halftime lead, but the Black Knights came out firing early in the second period with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to five. Portland went cold from three-point range for most of the second half before Niedermeyer and Campbell drilled consecutive shots from beyond the arc to push the lead back to 58-4 4 with 7:26 left. Army again fought back to pull with four at 58-54 with 4:18 remaining, but a Sikma free throw and layup by Smeulders gave UP some breathing room. The Pilots held Army without a field goal over the last 4:18 to hold on for the win.
Portland shot 46 percent from the field, but made just 13-of-26 free throws for the game. The Pilots had an 18-10 edge in points in the paint and 12-8 margin in second chance points.
Army forced 20 Pilot turnovers to earn a 27-15 edge in points off of turnovers, but the Black Knights shot just 35 percent from the field.
The Pilots will next host No. 22 Gonzaga (11-3) in a matchup between the projected top two West Coast Conference teams. That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 9 on ESPNU. The game is sold out.
