PORTLAND, Ore. --- Senior Sophie Schmidt converted a penalty kick with 63 seconds remaining in double overtime as the No. 3 Portland Pilots escaped with a 2-1 victory over the Washington Huskies before 4,285 fans Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The Pilots (12-1-0) extend their home field winning streak to 32 games with the victory.
Both sides had some quality opportunities throughout the overtime periods and the game appeared headed for a draw, but Pilot freshman Michelle Cruz was knocked down in the six yard box as she was trying to get on the end of a cross from the left flank. Cruz went down from contact by Huskies defender and the penalty kick was awarded. Schmidt finished to the low right for her fifth goal of the season and third game-winner.
After trailing all game, the Pilots scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute on the first career goal by freshman Amanda Frisbie. Fellow freshman forward Micaela Capelle created the scoring opportunity with a nice run into the penalty box and left off a pass to Frisbie who finished her attempt inside the left post.
Washington (7-3-1) scored in the sixth minute off of a corner kick to grab the lead in the early going. Sarah Martinez was left unmarked and headed the service from Lindsay Elston in for her second goal of the season.
Portland has come from behind to win four games already this season and once again overcame a sluggish first half with a quality second half. The Pilots have been outscored 8-6 before the half this season, but own a 22-2 goal-scoring margin after intermission on the year.
The Pilots outshot Washington 13-7 for the game, while the Huskies gained a 9-6 margin in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Hailey DeYoung made six saves to earn the win for UP, including two difficult stops in the overtime periods.
Portland will now shift its focus to the West Coast Conference portion of the schedule and open league play on Sunday, Oct. 10 at Gonzaga.
