This Week in Pilots Hoops…
Portland will host the Athletes in Action Classic at the Chiles Center this weekend to open the regular season. Joining Portland will be UW-Milwaukee, Florida Atlantic and UC Davis at the Chiles Center. Friday’s doubleheader opens with Portland vs. UW-Milwaukee on Friday at 1:30 p.m. followed by UC Davis vs. Florida Atlantic at 4 p.m. Saturday features FAU-UWM at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Pilots vs. UC Davis at 7 p.m. The tournament concludes with UWM vs. UC Davis on Sunday at 3 p.m. and the Pilots vs. FAU at 5:30 p.m.
Last Week
Portland defeated NAIA No. 5 ranked Concordia-Irvine last Sunday by a 68-65 margin. Senior F Luke Sikma paced the Pilots with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Junior PG Eric Waterford made two free throws with six seconds left in regulation and then blocked the Eagles’ three-point attempt at the buzzer to secure the win. Portland committed 20 turnovers in the game, but held the Eagles to 37 percent shooting for the game and had a 43-34 rebounding margin.
About Portland
Head coach Eric Reveno returns with his staff for their fifth season at Portland and coming off of back-to-back postseason appearances. The Pilots matched a school Division I record with 21 wins last season, following a 19-win 2008-09 campaign. Both years Portland was invited to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Reveno returns All-West Coast Conference honorable mention seniors Jared Stohl (11.5 ppg) and Luke Sikma (7.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg). Stohl led the nation in three-point percentage last season (.478) and is already the school’s all-time leader in three-pointers made (245). Sikma led the WCC last season in FG percentage (.563) and is the league’s top returning rebounder. Fellow senior Kramer Knutson (4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg) is a three-year starting center. Senior center Jasonn Hannibal and junior wing Nemanja Mitrovic also got extended minutes last year, while junior point guard Eric Waterford is expected to be the opening-day starter. Seven freshman and a sophomore transfer comprise the Pilot newcomers, with many expected to make immediate contributions.
About UW-Milwaukee
• Head coach Rob Jeter begins his sixth season at the helm of the Panthers.
• The Panthers posted exhibition wins over Milwaukee School of Engineering (86-37) and Carroll University (84-59) last week.
• Milwaukee returns four starters and eight lettermen from last year’s 20-win team.
• The Panthers were picked fifth in the Horizon League Preseason Poll. Tone Boyle, a 2009 all-league guard, returns to the rotation after missing last season due to injury.
• Portland and Milwaukee will meet for the first time on Friday.
About UC Davis
• Head coach Gary Stewart begins his sixth year at UC Davis.
• The Aggies defeated Menlo College (84-78) and lost to the Academy of Art (67-62) in their two exhibition games last week.
• UCD returns four starters from a team that finished third in the Big West last year.
• The Aggies were picked fourth in the Big West Preseason Media Poll, while senior G Joe Harden was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
• Portland is 2-0 all-time vs. the Aggies, most recently earning a 75-72 win in 2008-09.
About Florida Atlantic
• Head coach Mike Jarvis previously coached at George Washington and St. Johns.
• The Owls lost their exhibition opener in OT to Northwood, 85-81, and defeated Lynn College on Monday, 81-61.
• FAU returns nine of its top-10 players from last season’s team that finished 10-8 in Sun Belt play. The Owls were picked to finish second in the Sun Belt East standings behind Western Kentucky according to Blue Ribbon Magazine.
• Portland and FAU will meet for the first time on Sunday.
WCC Preseason Poll
Portland was voted fifth in the 2010-11 West Coast Conference men’s basketball preseason poll and Jared Stohl was named to the Preseason All-Conference Team, according the league’s head coaches.

Kentucky to Visit Portland at the Rose Garden on Nov. 19
Portland will NCAA powerhouse Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rose Garden. The game will be aired live on ESPNU and tickets are still available through ComcastTIX.com.
New Video Scoreboard Unveiled in Chiles Center
The Chiles Center will have a very new look as a centerhung video scoreboard was installed this fall. The new video board will allow for instant replays, real-time stats, and running show from a three-camera arena feed. The board will also be hooked up to DirectTV to allow for watch arena watch parties or other viewing desires. The new board became operational on Nov. 1, 2010.
