PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior Natalie Day led five Pilots in double figures with a game-high 17 points as the Pilots cruised to a 103-55 win over the visiting Concordia Cavaliers in a women’s basketball exhibition game on Monday night at the Chiles Center. UP senior Tara Cronin registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Cassandra Brown dropped 16 points in her collegiate debut.
The Pilots, who only led by eight at the half, exploded in the second half to outscore the Cavaliers 57-17. UP also dominated on the boards, finishing with a healthy 67-27 advantage in rebounds.
Day, who had just one point during the first half, hit seven of 11 from the field and connected on a pair of three-pointers en route to her game-high in points. The 6-0 wing was also active on defense, committing four steals. UP had 22 steals in all as Concordia turned the ball over 26 times, which led to 30 Portland points.
Cronin was one of several Pilots to have a big game on the glass. Senior Jessica Clemens had eight rebounds, while Brown, Day and junior Alexis Gannis each corralled seven. The Pilots were able to turn 29 offensive rebounds into 29 second-chance points.
Gannis finished with 15 points, while junior Nakeisha Brown put up 11. Brown has missed a majority of her first two seasons on The Bluff while battling injuries. Senior Lauren Angel had nine points and Clemens finished with eight. Freshman Alexis Byrd matched Clemens with eight points as well. Junior ReZina TecleMariam handed out a game-high six assists.
Danielle Clauson led Concordia, an NAIA school from North Portland, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney May added 10 points.
UP finished 41 of 85 (48.2 percent) from the field, hit eight of 23 from three-point range went 13-for-22 from the line. The Pilots held CU to 33.9 percent (19-for-56) shooting overall. The Cavaliers hit four of 13 three-pointers and were 13 of 25 on foul shots. Portland posted a 60-20 advantage in points in the paint, while the UP bench outscored that of Concordia 54-17.
The Pilots are scheduled to play one more exhibition game on Thursday night as Seattle Pacific visits the Chiles Center for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off. UP opens the regular season at Boise State on Nov. 12.
