Portland battled back from a 21-point first half deficit to cut the margin to one midway through the second half, but Washington State went on another late run for an 84-68 victory Tuesday night in the Cougar Hardwood Classic hosted at KeyArena in Seattle. Jared Stohl led Portland with 21 points and Nemanja Mitrovic added 17. Washington State junior guard Klay Thompson scored a game-high 35 points as the Cougars shot a blistering 59 percent from the field and 11-of-21 from three-point range. Portland struggled to 35 percent from the field and made 10-of-27 three-pointers. After trailing by 12 at halftime, Mitrovic led a Pilot assault with seven straight points out of the break. A 9-0 run capped by another Mitrovic three-pointer midway through the period made it 57-56 with 10:55 remaining. Mitrovic, who had 12 second half points, left the game with 9:14 remaining with a leg injury and did not return. The Cougars capitalized on his absence and immediately went on run. Faisal Aden capped the Cougars spurt with nine straight points over a 49 second span with a three-point play sandwiched by two three-pointers to put WSU up 75-60 with 5:56 remaining. WSU would extend the lead to 20 and cruise to victory.

He currently ranks seventh in the UP record book with 725 career rebounds. Rick Raivio (1976-80) is the all-time leader with 910 rebounds. Sikma also ranks in the school’s top 10 in field goal percentage (6th, .529) and blocked shots (4th, 70).

Staff Stability
Eric Reveno was named the 2009 WCC and District 9 Coach of the Year after leading UP to a 10-win improvement during the 2008-09 season. Now in his fifth year on The Bluff, Reveno credits the stability of his coaching staff as key to the program’s turnaround. All three assistants that joined Reveno when he was hired in April of 2006 have remained on the Portland bench ever since. No other team in the WCC has kept an entire staff together the last five years. Reveno is the third longest tenured WCC coach behind Gonzaga’s Mark Few (12) and Saint Mary’s Randy Bennett (10).
