BOISE, Idaho – Junior Daniel Coelho and freshman Jackson Martin led the Portland Pilots men’s tennis team to their seventh-straight victory knocking off Cornell Friday in a non-conference match leading in to the upcoming Boise State Spring Break Classic at the BOAS Indoor Tennis Center.
"We had a really good effort today from everyone,” said head coach Aaron Gross. “Jackson and Daniel had big days. They clinched the doubles together. And both won singles matches, with Jackson clinching it for the team win. Bryan Thorp also played a very good singles match. It was a good test for us after a break. We competed well."
The Pilots set the tone early in the dual competition taking the doubles point. The No. 47 ranked duo of seniors Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining earned an 8-6 victory at the No.1. Zivkovic and Schleining are now 9-1 in doubles action this season.
Coelho and Martin picked up an 8-5 win, marking their third straight victory for 5-5 overall on the season. Cornell claimed the final doubles match with Evan Bernstein and Jonathan Fife holding off Portland’s Geoff Hernandez and Nick Wales.
Zivkovic fell at No. 1 singles for his first defeat in his last eight singles matches. The 2009 All-West Coast Conference First Team selection is now 7-2 in singles play and 9-1 in doubles.
Junior Thorp clinched a victory at the second court, 6-4, 6-2. Cornell picked up points at the No. 3 and 4 spots. Portland’s Coelho nabbed a win in straight-sets while Martin wrapped up the team win with a three-set victory against junior Mirza Klis.
The Pilots next play in the eight-team Boise State Spring Break Classic. The tournament runs Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 27-28.
