Tournament Draw

BOISE, Idaho – Portland’s 47th-ranked doubles team of seniors Filip Zivkovic and Evan Schleining went undefeated but the Pilots men’s tennis team, who entered the weekend on a seven-match win streak, finished 0-3 at the Boise State Spring Break Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

 

"We always struggle with our first matches outdoors,” said head coach Aaron Gross. “It is a real adjustment for us. Plus, we played some pretty good teams.”

 

Portland closed out the tournament with a 5-2 loss by UC Irvine, after falling 6-0 and 7-0 to No. 52 Boise State and No. 47 UC Irvine.

 

“Against UC Irvine we played better and had a chance to pull out a win right down to the end,” said Gross. “I think we grew and got better over the weekend and will apply some of the lessons to the next several practices and be a better team for the last month of the season."

 

The No. 47 doubles duo of Zivkovic and Schleining won both their matches easily toppling Cal Poly’s Alexander Sonesson and Jordan Bridge, 8-4, then UC Irvine’s Zac Tsai and Steven Henderson, 8-2. No doubles matches were played against Boise State as the Broncos claimed the dual by sweeping the singles matches.

 

Portland next heads to California for three matches in three days beginning with Sacramento State on Friday, Apr. 9 at 10:00 a.m. The Pilots will then face the University of the Pacific on Saturday in Stockton, Calif. before taking on UC Davis on Sunday, Apr. 10.
