PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland men’s basketball team had one of the most successful back-to-back seasons in school history, culminating with a 2009-10 campaign that featured the program achieving a national ranking for the first time in 50 years and matching a school record with 21 wins. Four key players responsible for the resurgence of the program went through graduation ceremonies earlier this month.
Robin Smeulders, Taishi Ito and Ethan Niedermeyer were the first three recruits for head coach Eric Reveno in the spring in 2006. Nik Raivio transferred in prior to the 2007-08 season and all four completed their degree requirements and took part in the University of Portland Graduation Commencement on May 2, 2010.
A fifth senior from this past season, T.J. Campbell, is expected to complete summer school and achieve his undergraduate degree as well.
“This group of seniors has made us all very proud both on and off the court,” Reveno said. “They were a fun group to work with and we look forward to making them proud as Portland Pilot alums.”
The Pilots finished with nine wins during the first two years of this group’s era, but came back to win 19 games and 21 games in the final two seasons. Portland also posted consecutive third place West Coast Conference finishes for the first time in program history.
