Women's Soccer 9/17/2010 9:03:00 PM No. 3 Pilots Victorious over No. 6 Aggies Box Score I Photos PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior Halley Kreminski scored off a cross from freshman Sarah Bridges in the 65th minute as the No. 3 Portland Pilots defeated the No. 6 Texas A&M Aggies by a 1-0 margin Friday evening in front of 4,517 fans at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. It marked the second time in the last three games that Kreminski came off the bench to knock in a second half game-winner. Kreminski, who had 10 goals off the bench last season, started the first six games of 2010 without scoring a goal. She came off the bench for the first time this season last Friday versus No. 24 Rutgers and put away the game-winner in the 85th minute of a 2-1 victory. A week later she did the deed again. Bridges creating the scoring opportunity with a run down the left sideline. After taking a couple touches inside the end line, she sent a short cross to the left post. Kreminski came darting in and finished inside the near post for the only score of the game. It marked the first career assist for Bridges, a Jesuit High School graduate from Portland. The Pilots (9-0-0) improved on the third best start in school history with the win and extend their home winning streak to 30 games, while the Aggies (6-2-0) dropped their second game of the season to a top five team this year. Texas A&M lost a 3-0 decision to No. 1 North Carolina to open the season. Portland controlled possession for a majority of the match and recorded the first eight shot attempts in the first half. The Pilots had numerous good looks and finished with 15 shots in the period, but no goals. A&M settled down after a rough start and had their share of chances later in the period. Pilot freshman midfielder Michelle Cruz nearly gave the home team the lead in the 44th minute. Her shot from the top of the box took one bounce and deflected off of backup goalkeeper Kelly Dyer. The ball then went off the left post and danced on the goal line before Dyer was able to scramble and dive on it. Dyer came on in the 28th minute after starter Kristin Arnold left the match after a collision in the penalty box. Dyer came up big throughout the rest of regulation and made seven total saves. Pilot junior goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung stopped four shots and earned her first shutout of the season in her second start. Portland finished with a 25-11 advantage in shots and 6-4 margin in corner kicks for the game. Senior Sophie Schmidt led the Pilots with five shot attempts, while Whitney Hooper paced A&M with five shots as well. The victory was the third of the season for Portland against a ranked opponent and avenged a 3-1 loss to the Aggies last year on the road. It was the Pilots’ lone regular season loss of 2009. Portland will now prepare for a tough road trip to the Bay Area to face No. 15 California (4-0-2) and No. 2 Stanford (5-0-2) next week. Both games will be aired live on True Talk 800 AM (KPDQ). The Pilots and Golden Bears meet on Thursday at 3 p.m., while UP and the Cardinal take the pitch on Saturday at 7 p.m.Print Friendly Version
