PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots improved to 10-0 this season at the Chiles Center with a 57-42 victory over the Pepperdine Waves before 2,448 fans on Saturday night. Senior forward Luke Sikma led three Pilots in double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds as Portland improved to 14-4 overall and 2-1 in the West Coast Conference.
The Pilots held the Waves (7-14, 1-3) to 31 percent shooting for the game, including just 4-of-25 from three-point range. Portland also forced 19 turnovers leading to a 21-13 edge in points off of turnovers.
Senior guard Jared Stohl went 4-of-6 from three-point land and finished with 14 points, five rebounds and a career-best five steals. Junior guard Nemanja Mitrovic added 11 points, 10 coming in the first half.
Keion Bell and Mychel Thompson scored 10 points apiece to lead the Waves.
Consecutive three-pointers by Stohl gave the Pilots an early 29-16 lead and a pair of Sikma free throws just before halftime put Portland on top 33-24 at intermission.
The Waves would cut the deficit to three at 40-37 courtesy of two Keion Bell free throws, but Portland responded with a Sikma dunk and two free throws. The Pilots would push the lead to as much as 17 points in the closing minutes.
Portland head coach Eric Reveno gave extended minutes to his bench in the second half, regularly playing four freshmen at a time following Thursday’s double overtime win against Loyola Marymount.
The Pilots shot 40 percent from the field and 6-of-18 from three-point range.
Portland will now prepare for a road trip to the Bay Area to face conference rivals San Francisco and Santa Clara. The Pilots meet the Dons of San Francisco on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and then take on the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday at 3 p.m. Both games will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest. Thursday’s game will also air on Comcast SportsNet Plus, while Saturday’s game is available on Comcast SportsNet California.
