SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Portland sophomore Kaila Cameli broke free and scored 37 seconds into the second overtime to give the Pilots a 1-0 win over the San Francisco Dons in a West Coast Conference women’s soccer game at Negoesco Stadium on Sunday afternoon. It’s the first career game-winner for Cameli, who has scored four goals during UP’s last three games.
After neither team threatened the goal during the first 10-minute overtime, Cameli took a feed from Danielle Foxhoven before covering the final 50 yards of the field to force a 1-v-1 opportunity. Cameli then tucked a shot under USF goalkeeper Heather Haney into the right corner of the net to give the Pilots the 1-0 win.
The Pilots dominated possession throughout the match, posting sizeable advantages in shots (13-4), shots on-goal (10-3) and corner kicks (11-3). Portland improves to 7-8-1 (2-3-0 WCC) with the win, while the Dons drop to 5-11-0 (2-3-0 WCC).
After just three total shots were taken during the first half, the Pilots kept Haney busy in the second stanza, forcing the keeper into making seven saves. Cameli took a crack at the San Francisco goal in the 47th minute, while Foxhoven followed with a pair of shots.
Portland then peppered the USF frame with three shots during the game’s final 10 minutes, with two strikes coming from Ellen Parker. The Pilots also attempted four corner kicks during the closing minutes, but the Dons were able to keep the game scoreless, forcing it to extra time.
USF took the only shot of the first overtime.
UP goalkeepers Erin Dees and Hailee DeYoung combined for three saves to post Portland’s third shutout of the year. Haney finished with nine stops for the Dons.
The Pilots next travel to Southern California for their two remaining WCC road contests. On Friday afternoon in Los Angeles, Portland will face the Loyola Marymount Lions at 3 p.m. Then on Sunday, the Pepperdine Waves will host the Pilots for a 1 p.m. match in Malibu.
