THIS WEEK
• The Pilots travel to Southern California this weekend for their final West Coast Conference road trip of the season.
• On Friday, the Pilots will be in Los Angeles to face the Loyola Marymount Lions at Sullivan field at 3 p.m.; then on Sunday, the No. 3 Pepperdine Waves will host Portland for a 3 p.m. tilt at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu.
LAST WEEK
• After dropping a close 2-1 decision at home last Friday night to Santa Clara in front of a national television audience, the Pilots scored 37 seconds into the second overtime to defeat the USF Dons 1-0 in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.
• On ESPNU on Friday, the Broncos twice denied the Pilots on a PK in the first half; then after UP’s Micaela Capelle tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 63rd minute, SCU scored the game-winner with just five minutes to play.
• Against the Dons, it was Kaila Cameli who scored the game-winner in the 101st minute; she took possession at the halfway line, out-ran the defense for 50 yards and finished into the right corner of the net for her fourth goal in the last three games.
ABOUT THE PILOTS
• The loss at home to San Diego on Oct. 14 ended a 16-game home winning streak against WCC opponents, and it was the first league home loss for Portland since 2002, a span during which the Pilots went 23-0-2.
• UP’s last non-win at home against a league opponent was a tie with USF in 2006.
• Portland’s loss to BYU on Oct. 6 snapped a 28-match conference unbeaten streak for the Pilots.
• The Pilots went 19-1-2 last season and won their fourth straight WCC title with a 6-0-1 league record.
QUITE A RUN
• The Pilots have won four straight WCC titles and six of the last seven.
• Prior to the set-back at BYU, the Pilots hadn’t lost to a conference foe since 2006 when Santa Clara topped Portland 3-2 in Santa Clara, Calif.
• The Pilots are 30-3-2 in the WCC since that loss to SCU.
WHAT A GAME
• Portland’s 7-4 win over Saint Mary’s on Oct. 16 at Merlo Field was bizarre on several different levels.
• The Gaels scored three goals in the game’s final five minutes, with the final two scores coming just 30 seconds apart.
• SMC’s fourth and final goal was on a penalty kick with just five seconds left.
• UP’s Kaila Cameli scored her first three career goals to become the first Pilot to record a hat trick since Amanda Frisbie accomplished the feat during the first round of last year’s NCAA playoffs.
• Micaela Capelle had three assists, while also scoring a goal.
• The four goals are the most allowed by the Pilots at home since 1992 when North Carolina scored six, and it’s the most goals ever scored on the Pilots during a UP win.
AMONG THE WCC ELITE
• Micaela Capelle and Kaila Cameli are both among the conference’s statistical leaders.
• Capelle has scored a goal during four of the last five games, while also adding three assists; Cameli has four goals and two assists in the last four games.
• Cameli’s three goals and seven points against Saint Mary’s are both tied for single-game high’s in the WCC this season, while Capelle’s three assists against the Gaels are a league-high.
• During WCC contests, Capelle and Cameli are ranked 1-2 in points (11, 10) and are tied for the league-high in goals (4); Capelle is tied for second in assists (3), while Cameli is tied for fifth (2).
THE HEADLINER
• Senior Danielle Foxhoven, who ranks fourth all-time at UP with 55 career goals, has scored a team-high six goals this season.
• In career goals, Foxhoven sits behind only Christine Sinclair (110), Tiffeny Milbrett (103) and Shannon MacMillan (87).
• Foxhoven also ranks third in shots on-goal (131), is fifth in points (133), is sixth in overall shots (240) and goals per game (0.67) and is eighth in points per game (1.62) and game-winners (14).
• Foxhoven is a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, is on the MAC Herman Trophy watch list, is a Soccer American Preseason All-American and she landed on the All-WCC Preseason Team.
HARPER’S PLAYGROUND
• The Pilots are holding a season-long silent auction allowing fans a chance to bid on special warm-up jerseys; all proceeds will go to Harper’s Playground, which is a fund-raising effort to bring an inclusive playground to Arbor Lodge Park in North Portland.
• Each jersey features a player’s number, and the team will wear them before every home game.
• Fans can make bids on the jerseys at the fan information booth near the main entrance to Merlo Field during home games, bids will be accepted up until five minutes before halftime of the Gonzaga game on Nov. 5.
• Bids can also be made by emailing UP Director of Soccer Operations Whitney Stipetich at stipetic@up.edu.
• Harper is a local six-year-old girl who was born with Emanuel Syndrome; Harper’s Playground hopes to build community by providing the inclusive playground where children and adults of all abilities can play together.
STEP UP TO THE MIC
• After a successful debut last season, Micaela Capelle is finding her stride as a sophomore.
• Capelle leads the team in both assists (7) and points (15), while also adding four goals.
• She’s scored a goal in four of the last five games, and she registered three assists against Saint Mary’s on Sunday, which is tied for the third most on the UP single-game charts; it’s a single-game high in the WCC this fall.
• Capelle was named to the 2010 All-WCC Freshman Team, earned All-WCC Honorable Mention and landed on the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie First Team.
THE THREE-HEADED KEEPER
• Fifth-year senior Hailee DeYoung is one of three decorated goalkeepers on the UP roster.
• DeYoung, who has the majority of the starts (12) in goal this season, is eighth all-time at UP with 100 career saves, is ninth with 11 career shutouts and is 10th with a career GAA of 0.85.
NATIONAL EXPOSURE
• The Pilots appeared on national television three times this year.
• Fox Soccer Channel aired Portland’s game at home against Stanford on Sept. 15 and the WCC opener at BYU.
• ESPNU aired UP’s match with long-time conference rival Santa Clara at Merlo Field on Oct. 21.
HOME SWEET MERLO
• The Pilots once again led the nation in attendance in 2010, making it the sixth straight year to do so.
• Portland averaged 3,549 fans per game last fall for a total of 46,143; that’s almost 20,000 more fans than the next closest school (Texas A&M).
• UP was the first NCAA DI soccer team to ever crack the 40,000-fan plateau during a season; it happened during the historic 2005 run when UP totaled 40,841 fans.
• UP also holds the all-time single season mark of 47,082, which occurred in 2008.
• 4,594 showed up for UP’s game against Saint Mary’s (Oct. 16) for the fourth largest single-game crowd in the nation this year.
