PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore center Riley Barker scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the University of Portland Pilots to an 81-72 exhibition win over the Concordia Cavaliers Saturday night at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots gained a 52-30 rebounding advantage which led to an 18-2 margin in second chance points. Sophomore forward Ryan Nicholas scored eight points and had 12 rebounds, while freshman center Thomas van der Mars finished with 11 rebounds.
Sophomore point guard Tim Douglas finished with 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals in a team-high 32 minutes.
A total of 12 Pilots took the court for head coach Eric Reveno, including all four true freshmen. Guard David Carr recorded six points in 19 minutes, forward Dorian Cason had two points and four rebounds in 14 minutes, and guard Kevin Bailey finished with five points in 10 minutes.
Preseason All-West Coast Conference senior guard Nemanja Mitrovic was the third Pilot in double figures for scoring with 11 points.
Adam Herman led the Cavaliers with a game-high 26 points.
Portland shot 42 percent from the field, but made just 3-of-20 three-pointers. Concordia finished at 43 percent from the floor and 3-for-14 from beyond the arc.
The Pilots, coming off of consecutive 20-win seasons and three straight postseason appearances, feature a young roster comprised of two seniors, one junior, six sophomores, a redshirt freshman and four true freshmen. Senior point guard Eric Waterford did not suit up on Saturday due to injury.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center for their final exhibition game of the season on Friday when Concordia-Irvine visits for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The regular season begins on Saturday, Nov. 12 against Florida Atlantic at the World Vision Classic in Seattle.
