PROVO, Utah --- The University of Portland women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road to the BYU Cougars on Thursday in a nationally televised match at South Stadium. The contest, broadcasted on Fox Soccer Channel, marked the first contest for the Cougars as a new member of the West Coast Conference. The loss snapped a 28-match conference unbeaten streak for the Pilots.
Both teams weathered a cold and rainy first half with the Cougars (7-3-2, 1-0-0 WCC) testing Portland goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung with seven shot attempts. DeYoung was up to the task and made two saves as the sides went into the break tied at 0-0.
Defender Lindsi Lisonbee put the Cougars up 1-0 by finishing a corner kick taken by Jessica Ringwood in the 50th minute.
The Pilots (5-6-1, 0-1-0) answered less than 90 seconds later when sophomore Micaela Capelle ran onto a deep ball into the BYU penalty area, pushed the ball around Cougar goalkeeper McKinzie Olson, and then finished to the open net.
DeYoung made three more second half saves to send the game to overtime, and then pushed a shot by Carlee Payne off the outside of the post in the first minute of the extra period. But BYU kept pressuring and knocked in the game-winner courtesy of Jennie Marshall in the 95th minute.
BYU attempted 19 shots in the game and put eight on goal, while Portland had three shots on goal and four total shots. The Cougars racked up 14 corner kicks compared to one for the Pilots.
The Pilots will continue WCC play with a pair of home games next week at Merlo Field. Portland will host San Diego on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and then welcome Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. Free video streaming of both games will be available at
