PORTLAND, Ore. --- Freshman guard David Carr made a fast break layup with 0.7 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Portland Pilots a 99-97 win over Concordia-Irvine in an exhibition game Friday night at the Chiles Center. Sophomore point guard Tim Douglas led the Pilots with 20 points, while freshman guard Kevin Bailey added 18 points.
The Eagles scored the final eight points of regulation over the last 1:21 to push the game to overtime. The Pilots led the entirety of overtime before Donnell Phifer made a tough runner in the lane with 5.7 seconds on the clock to tie the game for the Eagles. Portland got the ball out of bounds quickly to Douglas. He passed ahead to a streaking Carr who finished at the rim over a retreating defender to seal the victory.
The high-scoring game was the second and final exhibition for the Pilots, who will prepare for their season opener on Saturday, Nov. 12 against Florida Atlantic as part of the World Vision Classic in Seattle.
Concordia-Irvine, an NAIA power that Portland defeated by a 68-65 margin last season in an exhibition at the Chiles Center, jumped out to an early nine-point lead in the first half. Douglas then took charge for the Pilots, finishing with 16 first-half points and hitting a runner at the buzzer to give Portland a 50-49 lead at the half.
The Pilots led for most of the second half and extended their lead to nine at 88-79 with 1:40 remaining, but the resilient Eagles were able to battle back and force overtime as Cameron Gliddon’s jumper with 18 seconds remaining tied it at 90-90.
Portland shot a blistering 57 percent from the field , but committed 23 turnovers and lost the rebounding battle 48-44. Concordia-Irvine attempted 97 shots compared to the Pilots’ 60, but were held to 39 percent from the floor.
A total of five Pilots scored in double figures as Carr and sophomore Ryan Nicholas finished with 14 each and senior Nemanja Mitrovic tallied 11. Barker corralled a game-high 14 rebounds for Portland.
Dakota Downs paced six Eagles in double-figures with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Austin Simon also notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Portland played without injured guards Eric Waterford (calf) and Tanner Riley (ankle).
The Pilots’ regular season opener on Saturday, Nov. 12 is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. tip-off at Alaska Airlines Arena on the University of Washington campus. Portland will play Georgia State on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m. and then the host Huskies on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. (TV on ROOT Sports).
