PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland senior Danielle Foxhoven scored a goal and added an assist during her last regular season appearance at Merlo Field as the Pilots blanked the Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-0 in a West Coast Conference women’s soccer match played on a chilly Saturday night. Ellen Parker and Amanda Frisbie also scored for the Pilots, who held the Bulldogs to just two shots during the regular season finale.
The win keeps Portland’s faint hopes of advancing to the postseason alive as the Pilots even their record at 9-9-1 overall and to 4-4-0 in the WCC. The Pilots will find out if they receive an at-large bid during the NCAA selection show, which will air live at 1:30 p.m. on Monday on NCAA.com.
Gonzaga’s season ends at 7-10-2 overall and at 0-6-2 in the league.
Parker got the scoring started for Portland when she finished on a nice feed from Foxhoven in the 41st minute. After Foxhoven had done well to reach the end line with possession, the native of Littleton, Colo., sent in a perfectly placed cross towards the far post, where Parker connected with a header to make it 1-nil. The goal would prove to be the first game-winner of the year for Parker, a sophomore.
Then only 20 seconds into the second half, Foxhoven gained possession at the half-line, raced about 30 yards to the top of the box, made a move to the right to avoid a defender and buried a shot into the lower right corner of the net. Her eighth goal of the season and 57th of her career gave Portland a cozy 2-0 lead.
Frisbie then capped the scoring on an impressive strike from about 15 yards out in the 84th minute. The sophomore received a pass near the far side line, approached the top of the box, cut back to the outside before beating the GU keeper with a shot inside the left post. Frisbie, a second-half sub, now has five goals on the year.
The three goals were more than enough for Portland goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung, who had to make just one save for her fourth shutout of the year. The Pilots attempted 21 shots on the night, 11 of which were on-goal.
It was senior night at Merlo Field as the Pilots honored DeYoung, Foxhoven, Halley Kreminski, Kassi McCluskie, Emma Nelson and Michelle Olivier with a pre-game ceremony. This group has posted the fourth best winning percentage of any current senior class in the nation with a current four-year record of 69-14-3. They claimed three WCC titles and made three trips to the postseason, twice reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Foxhoven ranks fourth all-time at UP in career goals and career points (139).
