Box Score RENO, Nev. --- The Portland Pilots concluded their rigorous non-conference schedule with a 78-60 loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Thursday at the Lawlor Events Center before 3,651 fans. Freshman guard Kevin Bailey scored a season-high 15 points to lead the Pilots, while sophomore guard Tim Douglas added 12 points. Nevada won its sixth straight game and improved to 9-3 overall. Portland lost its sixth consecutive game and will enter West Coast Conference play with a 3-10 overall record.
Nevada appeared to put the game away early with a 22-0 run midway through the first period to take a 28-point following a three-pointer by Malik Story with 5:58 left. The Pilots closed the half on a 14-6 run and trailed 46-26 at the break, but came out of the locker room with great energy to start the second half. Portland scored the first seven points of the period and would manage to cut the deficit to single digits at 53-44 on a three-point play by Bailey with 10:28 remaining. Nevada promptly responded with a 10-0 run to secure the victory.
Portland forced a season-high 19 turnovers by the Wolf Pack, but also committed a season-high 24 which led to a 28-19 Nevada edge in points off of turnovers. The Pilots shot 41 percent from the field and were 3-of-14 on three-pointers. Nevada shot 50 percent from the floor and converted 8-of-19 threes.
Seniors Dario Hunt and Olek Czyz led the Wolf Pack with 15 points each. Hunt also collected his fifth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.
Portland will take a brief break for the Holidays before opening WCC play on the road at Gonzaga on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
