HONOLULU, Hawaii --- The Portland Pilots ended the 2010-11 basketball season with a 76-64 road loss to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Tuesday night in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) at the Stan Sheriff Center. Senior G Jared Stohl scored a game-high 22 points, while freshman Ryan Nicholas added a season-high 12 points.
Portland finishes the season with a 20-12 overall record, while the Rainbows improve to 19-12 overall and advance to the second round of the CIT. The Pilots secured a 20-win season for the second year in a row, a first for the program since joining Division I for the 1958-59 season.
The Pilots played without freshman starting point guard Tim Douglas (foot), who missed his third straight game due to injury.
Stohl and fellow seniors Luke Sikma, Kramer Knutson and Jasonn Hannibal made their final appearance in Pilot uniforms. Sikma finished as the school’s all-time leading rebounder and extended that margin with 10 rebounds on Tuesday. Knutson blocked four shots in the game, while Hannibal finished with two points and two rebounds off the bench.
The Pilots led by seven early as Stohl got off to a fast start by making his first four shots, including three three-pointers. Hawaii bounced back to finish the half strong and carried a 38-32 lead into the break.
The Rainbows opened the second half with an 8-0 run to extend their margin to 46-32. Stohl broke the run with a three-pointer, but Hawaii would extend the lead to as much as 17 points. Portland battled back with an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 65-54 with 6:01 remaining courtesy of four straight points by Nicholas. The Pilots had their chances to bring the margin closer but missed three straight free throws and came up empty on their next five offensive possessions.
Portland finally pulled within single digits on a steal and two free throws by Stohl with 2:25 remaining to make it 69-60 and cut the deficit to 71-64 on a Derrick Rodgers layup, but Hawaii made enough free throws down the stretch to earn the victory.
The Rainbows gained a significant edge at the free throw line, converting 28-of-39 compared to Portland’s 4-for-8. The Pilots struggled to 35 percent shooting from the field and 8-for-26 from three-point range. Hawaii finished at 43 percent from the field and 2-for-8 from the three-point line.
Zane Johnson led four Rainbow players in double figures with 19 points, while Bill Amis (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Vander Jaoquim (11 points, 10 rebounds) added double-doubles. Junior PG Jeremiah Ostrowski was a difference-maker in the second half and finished with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.
