ABOUT THE PILOTS... ALBEIT BRIEFLY
• The Pilots went 19-1-2 last season and won their fourth straight West Coast Conference title with a 6-0-1 league record.
• The Pilots are 27-0-1 in WCC games during their current four-year run as league champs; UP has also claimed six of the past seven conference crowns.
• Portland was chosen to repeat as league champions, receiving six first place votes and 61 points overall in a vote of the WCC head coaches.
• 18 letterwinners returned this season, including eight starters, while seven newcomers joined the roster.
• The Pilots return both of their top scorers in senior Danielle Foxhoven and sophomore Micaela Capelle, who each registered eight goals and five assists last year for 21 points.
• Also back are UP’s two keepers in senior Hailee DeYoung (4 shutouts, 0.64 GAA) and sophomore Erin Dees (6 shutouts, 0.43 GAA); joining them this year is redshirt-freshman Nicole Downing.
• Last year’s loss in the NCAA Second Round ended Portland’s six-year run of at least reaching the Quarterfinals; UP has made the postseason 11 straight years and is one of three schools (North Carolina & Notre Dame) to have won multiple national championships.
• Reigning WCC Coach of the Year and UP head coach Garrett Smith has been named the league’s top coach five times.
• Among Portland’s key losses from last season are 2010 WCC Player of the Year Keelin Winters, 2010 WCC Defensive Player of the Year Jessica Tsao and UP Female Student Athlete of the Year Sophie Schmidt.
FOR STARTERS...
• The Pilots are 21-5-3 all-time in season openers.
• UP is unbeaten in its last seven (6-0-1) season openers, with its last loss to begin a season coming at BYU (1-2) in 2002.
• Portland is 8-2-0 all-time in home openers.
• The Pilots and Seminoles opened the 2007 season against each other at Merlo Field, with Portland coming out on top 2-1 in overtime.
THE HEADLINER
• Senior Danielle Foxhoven, who has played almost exclusively up top during her career, should see a lot of time at the attacking midfield spot this year.
• Foxhoven has already received several preseason honors; she’s been named to the MAC Herman Trophy watch list, she is a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, is a Soccer American Preseason All-American and landed on the All-WCC Preseason Team.
• Among UP’s career charts, Foxhoven ranks third in career shots on goal per game (1.70), is fourth in goals (49), fifth in points per game (1.83) and goals per game (0.74), sixth in points (121), and is tied for eighth in game-winners (12).
• The native of Littleton, Colo., tied for the team high last year with 21 points (8 goals, 5 assists).
THE THREE-HEADED KEEPER
• Portland has three decorated goalkeepers on the roster, including last year’s starters senior Hailee DeYoung and sophomore Erin Dees
• In 13 games last season, Dees posted six shutouts and a goals against average of 0.43, which is tied for eighth best all-time on Portland’s single season charts
• DeYoung had four shutouts and a GAA of 0.64 in 11 appearances; she is tied for fifth all-time with a career GAA of 0.59, is tied for ninth with 58 saves and is tenth all-time at UP with 10 shutouts.
• Joining the mix this year is redshirt-freshman Nicole Downing.
NOT AN EASY ROAD
• The seventh ranked Pilots have one of the most challenging schedules in the country as they’re scheduled to play nine teams that are currently ranked in the four major polls or receiving votes.
• Stanford is ranked No. 1 by Soccer America, while Florida State is ranked in the top five of three of the four polls.
• Of those nine games against ranked or receiving votes opponents, seven will take place at Merlo Field; the only games away from the friendly confines are at UC Irvine (Sept. 22) and at BYU (Oct. 6).
HOME SWEET MERLO
• The Pilots once again led the nation in attendance in 2010, making it the sixth straight year to do so.
• Portland averaged 3,549 fans per game last fall for a total of 46,143; that’s almost 20,000 more fans than the next closest school (Texas A&M).
• UP was the first NCAA DI soccer team to ever crack the 40,000-fan plateau during a season; it happened during the historic 2005 run when UP totaled 40,841 fans.
• The Pilots also hold the all-time single season mark of 47,082, which occurred in 2008.
LIVE ON THE AM DIAL
• KPDQ 800 AM will once again be the Pilots’ home on the radio as the True Talk Station and UP enter another year as broadcast partners.
• Eight games are scheduled to be broadcast live, including the season opener, the Sept. 15 tilt against No. 1 Stanford and the Oct. 6 road contest at BYU, the newest member of the West Coast Conference.
NATIONAL EXPOSURE
• The seventh ranked Pilots are set to appear on national television three times this year.
• Fox Soccer Channel will air Portland’s game at home against Stanford on Sept. 15 and on the road at BYU on Oct. 6.
• ESPNU will broadcast UP’s tilt with long-time conference rival Santa Clara at Merlo Field on Oct. 21.
• Portland was on national television twice last season, picking up a 1-0 win at both San Diego and Santa Clara.
A NEW LOOK
• For the first time in more than 30 years, the West Coast Conference has a new member as Brigham Young University formally joined the WCC last summer.
• The Cougars will field a team in 11 of the Conference’s 13 sponsored sports.
• With the change in membership, the WCC launched its new brand identity with a new logo.
• It’s the WCC’s first visual change since 1995.
THEY DON’T CALL IT ‘GAMECENTRAL’ FOR NOTHING
• UP is entering its second year of providing fans with ‘GameCentral’, which is a free portal via PortlandPilots.com that offers live video, live audio and live stats all on the same page.
• ‘GameCentral’ is available for every home game that is not scheduled for a national television broadcast.
• The internet broadcast will feature a three-four camera production this season, instant replays, in-game live and taped interviews and on-screen graphics.
THE BLOGGER
• Taking on blogging duties this season for the Pilots is sophomore goalkeeper Erin Dees. • Be sure to visit PortlandPilots.com/DeesBlog all season long to get an in-depth look at the UP soccer program.
