Box Score
SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- San Diego State’s Tiffany Hurst scored the game’s only goal in the 25th minute as the Aztecs topped the fourth-ranked Portland Pilots 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. The loss gives the Pilots a split during their home-and-away weekend as Portland defeated Washington State at Merlo Field on Friday night.
The Pilots now sit at 2-1-0 on the young season, while San Diego State improves to 3-1-0.
“We did everything we could to put ourselves in position to win the game,” head coach Garrett Smith said. “It was a little unfortunate we didn’t get a goal, but give San Diego State credit. They got a goal and then made things difficult for us.”
After 24 minutes of scoreless soccer, Hurst took advantage of a rebound from a shot by teammate Haley Locker, who had her attempt blocked. After a scramble in front of the net, Hurst easily finished from three yards out, with the assist going to Locker.
The score would remain 1-0 in SDSU’s favor for the next 65 minutes.
The Pilots did have a couple of chances, mostly coming in the second half. In the 48th minute, freshman Emily Sippel had a shot blocked before drilling the post on the follow-up attempt. Sippel helped lead the Portland attack with those two shots, while seniors Halley Kreminski and Danielle Foxhoven also had two shots each.
Both Foxhoven and Kreminski sent headers over the crossbar during the second half, with Kreminski’s attempt coming in the closing minutes.
The Aztecs and Pilots each finished with seven shots during the game’s second 45 minutes, but San Diego State held a 13-9 overall advantage for the game. UP had eight corner kicks to SDSU’s five.
Both keepers, Hailee DeYoung for Portland and Rachel Boaz for San Diego State, made two saves.
Next weekend the Pilots travel north to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Fever Classic, hosted by the University of Washington. On Friday, Portland is set to play Seattle U at 4:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium. UP concludes its stay in Seattle with a game against Boston University on Sunday at 11 a.m.
