IRVINE, Calif. --- The No. 21 UC Irvine Anteaters added an insurance goal after a late goal by Portland’s Amanda Frisbie to defeat the No. 25 Pilots 3-1 in a non-conference women’s soccer game played at Anteater Stadium on Thursday night. Frisbie’s goal, which came on a penalty kick in the 86th minute, pulled the Pilots within one, but UC Irvine’s CoCo Goodson answered with an insurance goal two minutes later.
The win improves Irvine’s record to 6-2-1, while the Pilots drop to 4-5-1.
UP was the more aggressive team early in the first half, firing off four shots on-goal during the game’s first 10 minutes. But Irvine goalkeeper Jennifer Randazzo was able to come up with four clutch saves on shots from Halley Kreminski, Emily Sippel and Danielle Foxhoven.
Randazzo’s saves kept the game scoreless and eventually allowed the Anteaters to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by Lexi Kopf in the 22nd minute. Kopf scored on a rebound after UP goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung stopped the initial shot from Natalia Ledezma.
Portland also ended the half with a flurry of shots as Foxhoven hit the post and Randazzo came up with yet another save, this time on an attempt from Michelle Olivier.
Irvine then made it a 2-nil advantage with another goal from Kopf just four minutes into the second half. This time Judy Christopher sent a service into the box, which Kopf was able to finish for her second goal of the game and fifth of the season.
The score remained 2-0 until Frisbie notched her second goal in two games and third of the season. UP was awarded the PK after Goodson was given a yellow card for a foul in the 18-yard box.
But Goodson would recover to score the insurance goal in the 88th minute.
UP finished with a 14-13 edge in shots and an 8-7 advantage in shots on-goal. Randazzo posted seven saves, while DeYoung countered with four.
The Pilots next face the Cal State Northridge Matadors in Northridge on Sunday. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
