NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Sophomore Amanda Frisbie scored the game-winner just 28 seconds into overtime as the No. 25 Portland Pilots posted a 1-0 win over the Cal State Northridge Matadors at Matador Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. Three of Frisbie’s four goals this season have been game-winners.
Sunday’s game-winner came only moments after kick-off of the first overtime. UP’s Micaela Capelle, a sophomore, was able to deflect a Northridge pass, with the ball ending up at the feet of junior Taylor Brooke. Brooke immediately went on the attack and dribbled all the way into the Northridge 18-yard box. That’s when she sent the ball to the far side of the box, where an unmarked Frisbie buried a shot inside the left post.
The win evens Portland’s record at 5-5-1 on the year, while the Matadors drop to 2-6-1.
“It was a back and forth game and we held tough down here,” said Portland head coach Garrett Smith. “It’s definitely a good win and it was a good team effort.”
The Pilots withstood 15 shots from Northridge to get the shutout win. Portland senior goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung managed an impressive nine saves, with three coming in 1-v-1 situations. It’s DeYoung’s second blank slate of the season and the 12th of her career, which ranks ninth all-time in UP program history.
“Hailee was awesome,” said Smith. “She and (defender) Michelle Olivier kept us in the game. We were able to keep the game in our favor and we found a way to win it.”
Portland had nine shots, with Frisbie leading the way with three. Both attempts from senior Danielle Foxhoven were on-goal, while Capelle also added a pair of shots.
Melissa Fernandez led Northridge with five shots, two of which were saved by DeYoung. Northridge keeper Cynthia Jacobo tallied two saves on the day, and the Matadors were credited with a team save. That came in the 43rd minute when a header by UP freshman Rebekah Kurle was knocked down by a Northridge defender at the goal line.
Both teams finished with three corner kicks.
The Pilots don’t play again until Thursday, Oct. 6 when they open their West Coast Conference schedule at Brigham Young. Kick-off in Provo, Utah, is set for 6 p.m. (Pacific). The game will be broadcast live on national television on Fox Soccer Channel, while 800 AM will carry the game locally on the radio.
