Former University of Portland standout guard Erik Spoelstra is most known for his title of head coach of the Miami Heat. He led the franchise to the 2011 NBA Finals in his third year at the helm. But Spoelstra is less known for his service efforts that embody the University’s mantra of Teaching, Faith, and Service. Grantland.com chronicled Spoelstra’s third trip to the Philippines this summer and detailed his growing bond with the country.
A 1992 graduate of the University, Spoelstra succeeded Pat Riley as head coach in 2008 and served as an assistant coach with the Heat from 1997-2008. A native of Portland and graduate of Jesuit High School, Spoelstra played on The Bluff from 1988-92 and is among the school’s career leaders in a variety of categories. A three-year starter and West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year in 1989, Spoelstra is a member of the 1,000-point club.
