SEATTLE, Wash. --- The eighth-ranked Portland Pilots suffered their second straight 2-0 defeat on Sunday, this time to Boston University at the Husky Invitational at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Pilots did hold a 12-9 advantage in shots, but were once again unable to find the back of the net.
“That was perhaps our best performance of the year, but we made two mistakes, which led to two goals,” said head coach Garrett Smith. “We did a lot of things right, but it’s definitely not the result we wanted.”
Portland, which now sits at 2-3 on the season, next returns home to host the Nike Invitational at Merlo Field next weekend. UP will face Washington at 7 p.m. on Friday night before playing Oregon State on Sunday.
The Pilots came out aggressive against the Terriers (5-0-1), peppering the BU frame with four shots during the game’s first 17 minutes. But BU withstood the onslaught and then scored on its first shot of the game. Taylor Krebs found the top right corner of the net in the 20th minute to give the Terriers a 1-nil advantage.
The one-goal lead would stand until the 70th minute when BU’s Kylie Strom also finished in the top right corner. Her second goal of the season gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead, which they would hold onto.
The Pilots did have their chances in the second half, including a shot by Sarah Bridges that rattled the post in the 58th minute. UP also had four corner kicks to Boston’s zero.
UP, which dropped a 2-0 decision to Seattle U on Friday night, has lost three straight games for the first time since 1999.
