Warnick Elected to STMA Board of Directors
STMA Elections Results
LAWRENCE, Kan. –Jay Warnick, CSFM (Certified Sports Field Manager), the athletics field manager for the University of Portland has been elected as Director At-Large to the Sports Turf Managers Association’s Board of Directors. He has been active in STMA since 1996, and is currently serving as Chair of the Editorial Committee. Currently the treasurer of STMA’s charity, The SAFE Foundation, Warnick has also served on the STMA Bylaws, Nominations and Chapter Relations Committees.
“It is a huge honor because the Sports Turf Manager’s Association is the premier group that represents those who manage sports fields and facilities,” Warnick noted. “It means a lot to be elected in the truest form of the sense in that we are elected by our peers. It is a great honor to represent the needs and try to further the industry.”
Warnick previously served on the STMA Board of Directors in 2005-2006.
As Director-at-Large Warnick will sit on the 13-member board of directors and set policy and help guide the association in achieving its strategic plan. He will also chair one or more committees.
“The association serves a great purpose to not only educate the members of the association but the public as far as the role of a sports field manager, how important they are to the success of any organization – university, professional team, or little league,” Warnick added.
His work experience includes product research and marketing in the Western Region for World Class Athletic Surfaces, athletic field manager for BYU-Idaho and the University of Utah, Director of Fields for the Seattle Seahawks, and assistant field manager of the Baltimore Ravens.
Warnick joined the Pilots last July and has been managing the care, maintenance and renovation of all the school’s intercollegiate athletic fields and grounds.
“It’s a vision. Everybody in the athletics department has the vision,” expressed Warnick. “I fully believe that the fields and facilities that I take care of will be in the conversation of the best anywhere. Having the support of all the coaches makes all the difference in helping me to do my job and show improvements in the fields. I wouldn’t be able to consider the honor of being selected for a board position without the support of the administration and the university for giving me the opportunity.”
Warnick, who earned a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from Utah State in 1995, has received and earned several awards, honors and certifications, including becoming one of the original 25 people to be professionally certified as a Sports Turf Manager.
“It’s very exciting to be representing a national association. I’m not just representing me, or sports turf managers, I’m representing the university,” Warnick concluded. “It’s a lot of fun to tell people about the University of Portland, the facilities and the coaches.”
