SEATTLE, Wash. --- Portland enjoyed another solid meet this last weekend at Dempsey Indoor’s Husky Classic as nine athletes posted marks that rank in the Top-10 in school history. Sophomore Julia Fonk led the charge on the women’s side, posting the fourth best mark in the 800m along with a one-mile time just outside the top ten. Jared Basset ran his way to his second spot on the men’s 3000m event.
After posting the fifth best time (8:07.89) in the 3000m race at the UW Invitational earlier this season, Bassett broke his own mark on Saturday with a time of 8:05.36. Bassett, who placed fourth in the competition, now holds the fifth and sixth best marks in school history.
Teammate Scott Fauble also cracked the top ten in the 3000m event with a time of 8:10.51, ranking him one spot behind Bassett.
The women’s team continued their streak of posting top ten times. Two weeks removed from Ruth Croft and Rosalind Smith recording the fifth and sixth best times in the 5000m event at the UW Invitational, Merel Van Steenbergen (17:04.87 – 4th), Lyndy Davis (17:16.31 – 6th), and Kellie Houser (17:25.34 – 7th) ran their way into the record books.
Davis and Smith now own two spots in the Top-10. Smith, who ran a 17:26.36 on Saturday) ranks nine and ten while Davis ranks five and six. Davis’ personal best came in 2010 with a time of 17:05.55.
In the 3000m race, Croft and Laura Hottenrott-Freitag slid into the ninth and tenth places. Hottenrott-Freitag, who ran a 9:52.91, shattered her previous mark of 10:03.69. Her old mark had been the tenth best entering the weekend.
Fonk captured first place in both of her events. With a 2:14.55, she edged Danielle Low (UCLA) and Amy Thornton (BYU) by just three-tenths of a second in the 800m. Fonk then easily won the mile run, finishing with a time of 5:00.30.
