Blog Entry #1 – Geoff Hernandez (Feb. 17)
Well here we are. A ragtag bunch of misfits from around the globe known as the University of Portland Men’s Tennis Team has entered the national collegiate tennis ranks and aren’t looking back. Last weekend we took on the nationally ranked Anteaters of UC Irvine and got our second win against a ranked opponent this season. The Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center (or as we like to call it, “the bayou”) has been home to a key string of victories early in our season. We will continue to fight as we head to Texas this upcoming weekend to take on UT-Pan American and number 67 UT-San Antonio [
Weekend preview here].
But there’s another, more important matter I’d like to discuss, a matter of social media. Many of our team members, including both our coaches, have joined the world of Twitter and are trying to make a name for themselves via tweeting. I’d like to share some of my teammate’s tweets, I will choose one that encompasses not only their personality but also their style of tweet.
I’ll start with my teammate and close friend, Geoff Hernandez, @McGeoffrey to the social media realm.
@McGeoffrey: The mexican scores the winning goal! Lets go nucks!!!!!! We ain't scared of the ice baby! #takingovernhl
As we can see, Geoff likes to show his Mexican pride along with his love for hockey. Geoff has been known to use the hashtag (#) very loosely in his tweets, his fans adore his nonchalant attitude towards the hashtag but other critics are very harsh on his reckless usage. Our native Spaniard, Alex Ferrero, rarely uses the hashtag but tweets in a style all his own.
@Ferretitui: No se oye nada de los 2 goles anulados de manera ilegal al Ajax no? me hubiese gustado ver a los merengues si hubiese sio el Barsa #Llorones
Alex tweets in his native tongue, and since I am a Spanish minor, I will translate this for the general public.
@Ferretitui: soccer soccer soccer Barcelona soccer soccer Barca soccer Call of Duty
[Editor’s note: the tweet appears to be about two goals being called back in a soccer game.]
Alex frequently exhibits his love for the sport of soccer, even in his tweets.
Lastly, let’s take a lot at a tweet from our head coach, Aaron Gross. Always checking on the health of his players and working on his own comedic bran, Aaron likes to use Twitter as a means to combine the two. We can see it in this next tweet, which also includes our own Geoff Hernandez.
@uptennis1: Watch out for the excess calories tonight @McGeoffrey. Don't want to ruin great week. #MomentOnLipsLifetimeOnHips
These are only a few of the tweets passed through the UP tennis realm. Other team members/twitter enthusiasts are
@JGuayZ (Justin Guay),
@micheljhukwo (Michel Hukwo),
@DenzelCoelho (Daniel Coelho),
@hanko76 (Assistant Coach Henry Oldham), and my own twitter,
@JackZaneMart. If you want a good laugh, need advice on fitness mixed in with hilarious puns, or even just want to learn Spanish, follow some of the UP tennis team on twitter. See you there.
